Identify your needs
Bike commuters, hikers, Sunday cyclists, or competitive cyclists do not have the same needs. Thus, each cycling practice will be linked to a particular solution, it's up to you to ask the right questions:
- How many times a week do you go out on your bike?
- Do you need a lot of storage?
- What kind of products do you need to carry on your bike? (tools, spare clothes, …)
- Do you need to distribute the load?
These questions will help you identify your needs and choose the appropriate solution. After this step, you'll need to consider decluttering a bit. This will allow you to carry only the essentials and avoid unnecessary items.
Now let's move on to the different existing alternatives!
1 – The classic pannier
You probably already know this accessory; a good alternative to a backpack is the pannier.
With this type of product, you can carry a fairly large volume of items, often protected from the elements. Indeed, you can find such panniers made of waterproof materials with a Roll-Top closure system, to keep all your belongings dry!
However, be aware that these types of panniers have a major flaw: their attachment system. Often, these are not standard, not to mention that you'll need a luggage rack to attach them to.
2 – Frame bags
Ideal for road cycling enthusiasts, these small bags that attach to the frame allow you to store your energy snacks, first aid kit, or repair tools. All bike users will be happy to have them within reach!
3 – Baskets
Another item full of authenticity. The basket, often associated with forest rides, Sunday outings, or useful for picking up your baguette from the local baker. This can be particularly useful, especially since, unlike panniers which can sometimes unbalance your bike if you only fill one, the basket will not pose this problem. However, if open, it's preferable in dry weather unless you have a waterproof handlebar bag.
4 – Panniers / Backpacks
Because ultimately, why choose?! Recently, innovations have appeared in bike accessories, and this is one of them. Once you arrive at your destination, you can remove your pannier from its attachment system and wear it as a backpack. A system that will delight bike commuters!
📍Another positive point of this system is that you can now find them with a standard attachment system.
5 – Panniers / Shoulder bags
Another interesting innovation! This time, your pannier doesn't transform into a backpack but into a shoulder bag. And once again, with certain brands, there are no compatibility issues with the standard attachment. So why hesitate?
